建築が捉えた都市空間、シチリアンアベニューは都市デザインの大傑作。一つの建物を切り開くように通った道筋は、ロンドンの中心市街地に突然現れる空に開いた大広間である。６０メートル程長いこの路地空間は、三角形型街区のコーナーにあり、ロンドンのホルボーン地区のアーバンフラグメント、都市的断片だと言える。

道でもありながら広場的要素を持っている。 頭上には門を示す鴨居があり「潜る」と外の交通を背後に内の広間的空間に潜入された感じがする。左右のショーウィンドウは全て曲線ガラス、なめらかでゆとりのある雰囲気が漂うまちの一角として移り変わる。いつの間にか歩みが緩やかになり、都心部のペースに軽くブレーキが掛かる。シチリアンアベニューは近代都市にあるべき貴重なオアシスだ。

1世紀前に築かれたSicilian Avenueは時の流れと共に何らかの変化が見られ考えさせられる。

• 　例えば、１９７４年の写真はなごやかで、静かな活気性を持つ都市中のパブリックスペースの様子が伺える。それが２０１４年になると雰囲気が異なっている。建築物そのものはそれこそ変わっていない、むしろファサードは以前より清掃されている。都市空間は同様の要素だ。するとなぜこの 賑わいに欠けた寂しさ？ 経営上のなりゆき、「大広間」のマネージメントミス？考えてみませんか。訪れたことがあるあなたはどう思いましたか。
• 　なぜ名称にシチリアンアベニュー？　ローマン、　タスカンでもあり得たのに、ちょと気になりませんか。

A quintessential exemplar of urban design in architecture, or architecture as city design. Sicilian Avenue, just over 60m in length, is an anomaly of urban tissue in the midst of central London – but what an unexpected, mischievous delight to behold. The “avenue” is a diagonal fragment cut off at the triangulated corner of Bloomsbury Way and Southampton Row in the Holborn district.

Sicilian Avenue is both a street and a “city room.” Overhead portals at either ends hint at entering an outdoor room, traffic noise is now farther away, fanciful curved-glass shop windows undulate, arousing curiosity, inviting one to pause – an interiorized outdoor space open to the sky. An urban public oasis, a perfect Town Room.

• The photos taken in 1974 show a pleasant, actively inhabited urban public space. The other photos from 2014 are less animated, with vacant shops, a sad Spaghetti House, hairdresser, a camera store, disinviting café. The architectural space is still exemplary, so an evidence of poor management? If you have visited, what are your thoughts?
• Why named Sicilian Avenue? Why not Roman, or Tuscan?
