その場所を訪れることに終わらない、その中で時を過ごすということ。 ひとや雰囲気や出来事の偶然な体験。相互が他方の中で具体化されていくという関係に重点をあて、その経験を通して自己から生み出される創造したいという気持ちと、それによって作られる形態との関わりを見つめる。すなわち、空間、時間、場所と自分自身との交差からの発見。

もう一度、時間を過ごしたくなる場所との出会い。「また訪れればよいのです」という一言にこめられた意味。人生は急ぐことも、焦る必要もないということに気がつく。ヴェネト・エクスペリエンスは、建築、都市デザイン、環境デザイン、土木工学、文学、政治・経済や心理学等といった、多岐にわたる分野を横断し、また、スケールの交錯からおこる創造性に興味をもつ人のために開かれたプログラムである。

イタリア、ヴェネチアという迷路のような都市を、いつのまにか地図なしで歩けるようになること。 このプログラムはヴェネチアの街及びヴェネト州という広範囲でフィールドワークを行うと同時に、ヴェネチア出身の建築家カルロ・スカルパ(1906 – 1978)の作品を体験することによって、参加者1人ひとりにデザインの原点、また「場の力」に対しての批評の視点を養う。プログラム期間中、世界中の大学の多様な学生とインストラクター、現地の教育者、 専門家、 ヴェネチアの職人が恊働し、エクササイズ、プレゼンテーションによる、参加者の自己意識と自己表現の場をつくりあげる。

神田先生というひとりの教育者の存在。それは、従来の教育にはない自由と出会うこと。放任ではなく、見えない“手綱”でうまくコントロールされている。１人ずつを見守っていてくれる安心感、温かささえある。　絶妙なタイミングで、次の指針がみえてくる。最後に向かうところは、自分自身。

Veneto Experience / VE_italia
Design in Place / Place by Design

Veneto Experience (VE) is open to all, especially to those interested in design at diverse scales of craft, architecture, landscape and city form. By engaging in onsite fieldwork in and around Venice, with particular convergence on projects by the Venetian architect and educator Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978), the program provides opportunities to develop critical thinking in relating the power of place to design.

By engaging in sequenced exercises and spontaneous peer learning, VE participants explore the intersections of formal synthesis and phenomenology; of time, place and people; and of inspired creativity and experimental production. Students will collaborate on various exercises and discussions, meet local designers and artisans, culminating in studio work leading to a final presentation.

The program welcomes undergrads, grads, alums and professionals with or without any formal background in design. Participants each year have included students from various colleges in the U.S., Europe and Japan, and from a wide range of disciplines and interests. Veneto Experience is held annually during the Winter, Spring and Summer weeks.

The program was initiated in 2004 at the MIT Department of Architecture and has been directed by Shun Kanda, assisted by other faculty, professionals and artisans in the Veneto region.
